DRIVERS are being asked to take extra precautions ahead of Storm Eunice.
Motorists, particularly those driving high-sided HGVS, caravans and motorcycles, are advised to check the weather and driving conditions before their journeys.
Sean Martell, National Highways head of service delivery, said: “We’re encouraging drivers to check conditions before setting off and to consider if their journey is necessary or can be delayed until conditions improve.
“Drivers should be aware of sudden gusts of wind which can affect handling and braking, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorbikes plenty of space.
“In the event of persistent high winds we may need to close bridges to traffic for a period, so please be alert for warnings of closures and follow a signed diversion route.”
He said that particular attention is required when in exposed locations such as coastal and high lying areas and bridges which could be affected by the high winds.
The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning to red in some areas of the country with an amber alert in place for Berkshire, although this may change.
An amber weather warning means there is an increased likelihood of disruption including flying debris, fallen trees or power lines, and a potential for damage to life and property.
Wind speeds will build throughout the early hours of Friday morning in the county, with gusts of up to 70mph expected from around 9am.
