A BEGINNERS needlefelting class for those with cancer, will take place in Wokingham.
Mounted by charity Cancer Support Network, the event will allow people to meet for coffee, to chat if they wish, and to make a piece of needlefelt art, in two hours, that they can take home.
The session is run by psychotherapist, and needlefelt artist, Munni Dodeja, who discovered the craft at Glastonbury many years ago and fell in love with it.
“Needlefelting is a repetitive, and rhythmical craft, both of which decrease anxiety and aid relaxation,” she says.
“The activity uses a sharp needle to stab wool fibres so that they become matted and felt-like, and uses carded wool to ‘paint’ pictures.
“Just as you would mix shades of green for a blade of grass in a painting,” Munni explains,“in needlefelting, different wool shades can be combined to create complex pictures and colours.
“But the work can become three dimensional if you wish.”
“I’ve been doing this for many years now, and as a psychotherapist, I see it as another tool that can help with mental health.”
“It’s a really great activity for cancer sufferers.
“It provides a community, where everyone is in the same boat.
“Talking can be quite intense, but a relaxed shared activity can help people to open up.
“Research has shown that repetitive actions have a calming effect on brain function.
“And creating something is beneficial too – it’s great to be able to put something on the wall and say, ‘I did that’.”
The class takes place at Involve Community Services Erftstadt Court Wokingham RG40 2YF.
The group will meet on Friday, September 30 from 10.30am.
