FORGET the idea that people in a care home sit around all day drinking tea and nibbling biscuits … the latest thing is boxing.
Well, kind of.
Boxericse uses training concepts that boxers use to keep fit, including punching safely, trying different footwork, and using the body and mind.
Last month, residents of Bickerton House on Warfield Road had a go as part of Care UK’s new Let’s Get Physical initiative.
The team at the Bracknell-based care home adapted the workout so that residents of all abilities could join in by removing the high intensity element, but keeping the boxing movement.
Erika Smith, home manager at Bickerton House, said the residents enjoyed a fantastic time.
“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, which is why Boxercise seemed like the perfect activity,” she said.
“Boxercise is great for keeping fit, and especially for older people, as it improves motor skills, balance and reaction time, and engages hand-eye coordination.
“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, Boxercise was a hit – we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may have Muhammad Ali in our midst.”
