WOKINGHAM Town Council’s community art event returns for a third year of pavement decorating.

Chalk About It is an art activity designed to give people an opportunity to express their feelings in a relaxed, open air environment, where they are supported and not judged.

Following the success of the project in the last two years, Wokingham Town Council has again joined forces with professional pavement artists Urban Canvas, and local mental health groups to bring the community a third event.

This year the theme is, Reflecting.

Organisers say that it can feel difficult to find time for the individual in a fast paced world of varying pressures.

They add that it is important to take time to reflect and relax.

One way to do this, they say, is by being creative.

Participants will once again be reflecting through collaborative artwork.

This year, the work will feature the repeated image of a mirror neuron, with its dual functions of learning and emotion.

The art will celebrate both individuality and the creation of something bigger than each single contributor.

A Town Council representative said: “Many of us often have something to say or wish to express how we feel but find talking and saying things out loud hard to do.

“Writing things down, drawing or a form of creative activity can often help.

“We hope that by creating a safe, supportive, inspiring space, we can in some way help residents, both children and adults, express their thoughts and feelings.”

As well as contributing to the collaborative piece, attendees are invited to create individual artwork that shares their thoughts and feelings, either in chalk, or on paper.

Artists, health professionals and helpers will be present on the day to chat and work with anyone who would like to interact.

An Urban Canvas artist said: “Art in a public place has the ability to slow down time and allow you to lose yourself in the moment.

“It’s a distraction from negative thoughts and food for the soul.

“Art can free you in some respects, allowing people to mix socially if they wish and take part in something bigger than themselves.”

Cllr Barrie Callender, Chair of Arts and Culture Committee, said: “It isn’t easy getting through what life throws at us.

“This year I will be helping out at Chalk About It.

“I hope to express myself through the creative tools and support on offer, from the artists and mental health professionals who continue to provide excellent help and support for this important event.”

Chalk About It takes place in Wokingham Market Place, on Sunday, August 20, from 11am to 3pm.

People wanting to take part can just turn up on the day.
