TWO local groups have been working together to raise funds for a local children’s charity.
Earlier this year, The Arts Society Wokingham approached Barkham Hookers leader Gaynor White to ask whether her team could create a post box topper to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
Gaynor and her crochet creatives set to work and put together a piece of woollen art that adorned the double post box outside the old Wokingham post office this summer.
It featured Vincent van Gogh and his Starry Night painting, and Leonardo da Vinci, resplendent with a long curly grey beard.
Gaynor donated the artwork to the society to raffle at their October lecture in aid of her chosen charity, First Days.
£200 raised by the fundraising event has been donated to the First Days Christmas Appeal, a campaign that aims to make sure that no child misses out on special festive activities.
First Days’ magical Christmas Grotto enables youngsters whose families are going through hard times to experience the joy of Christmas.
While the children talk to Santa and take part in Christmas crafts, their families can choose a special gift for them to open on Christmas morning.
The Arts Society Wokingham is primarily an arts appreciation group, but as well as holding monthly illustrated talks, one of its aims is to support community projects that will make a difference to young people by helping and encouraging them to expand their horizons and realise their personal potential.
Meetings take place in Binfield, on the third Monday of the month.
The Society’s November lecture will celebrate the centenary of a well-known children’s author, A.A. Milne, whose books about the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh are a firm favourite of children of all ages.
James Campbell will explore the collaboration of A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard.
Shepard’s well-loved images bring the author’s characters to life, in what was to become a winning collaboration of words and images.
The illustrated talk will take place at King’s Academy, Binfield, on Monday, November 18, at 7.45pm.
