With the lovely summer weather that we’ve been enjoying recently, it’s a good opportunity to stroll around our Town Centre and notice the wonderful works of art that are on display which do much to enhance our environment.
If you’ve had time to pause in Peach Place to enjoy refreshment from one of the cafes or to sit to appreciate the sunshine, you might have noticed the beautiful fish mosaic on the wall of the Bradbury Centre/Methodist Church.
It was installed four years ago to mark the bicentenary of the Methodist Community in Wokingham.
We wanted to celebrate the people of the church who had gone before us, create something for the people who would come after us while remembering the church community who worship here now.
And so, we commissioned this wonderful mosaic sculpture as a gift for all the people in our town to enjoy.
We chose fish because they contain so much symbolism in the Bible and for the Christian faith. Jesus’ first disciples were fishermen and he urged them to “fish for people” – in other words to encourage others to join in the Christian way.
Our shoal of 40 fish is designed to be swooping towards our entrance doors in a gesture that suggests that all are welcome to become part of our community.
Why don’t you find some opportunity to come and look at this work of art for I hope that you might find your own meaning within it.
And you’d be most welcome to try out our café or our Sunday worship too.
