Suggestions that a candidate in the new Earley and Woodley parliamentary constituency is attempting ‘greenwash’ voters have been rubbished.
Merv Boniface, the chair of the Wokingham Green Party, made the suggestion after seeing the latest campaign literature from Pauline Jorgensen, the Conservative candidate.
He told Wokingham Today: “You have probably picked up the new local Conservative drive to disguise themselves as Green Party candidates.
“Their new Green branding is far from the traditional blue, and practically indistinguishable from the Green Party’s branding.
“There is a single small descriptor saying who they truly represent.
“We are aware that, locally, they are pretty short of new ideas but I am surprised that there is an about turn from the national leadership in regard to wanting to appear concerned with Green principles.
“This is what we know as ‘greenwashing’ at its worst, and is inexcusable.”
In reply, Pauline said: “The leaflet is standard parliamentary green.
“Despite what they may think, the Green Party do not have a monopoly on green.”
She added the leaflet had Conservative branding and a picture of the Prime Minister on the back.
“I think the Green Party really are clutching at straws to say it could be mistaken for one of theirs.”
