WOKINGHAM’S newest estate agency has opened its doors.
The modern Martin & Co has opened in the historic Corn Chandlers stores in Peach Street and to mark the occasion, the Mayor of Wokingham Borough, councillor Parry Batth, officially opened the branch.
During his visit he examined photographs showing the history of the Corn Chandlers stores, which used to be a pet shop before its extensive refurbishment.
The agency is a franchise operated by husband and wife team Mike and Erica Townend, who have lived and worked in the area for more than 20 years and have 15 years’ experience in the property business.
Mrs Townend said: “We’re excited to be opening an office in Wokingham and thrilled that the Mayor of Wokingham Borough visited us on this occasion.
“We have a great team on board and delighted to be situated in a beautiful listed building on Peach Street that has been in the Bowyer family for more than 100 years.”
The couple hope to be part of the Wokingham community and pledged not to hide away in the back office.
“We will give the attention to details and individual care that people need when transacting their property needs. This way the customer wins every time.”

Cllr Batth was pleased to see the Peach Street business open.
He said: “Wokingham is embarking on a new period of growth and regeneration. Over the next few years, more than 13,000 new homes will be built in planned development, which will bring with it about £350 million investment in infrastructure and facilities such as new schools, roads, shops, nature reserves and community centres.
“The opening of a new Martin & Co office will add greatly to the town and I’m sure will offer an excellent service to local residents.”
And the Townend’s experience in property has not gone unnoticed. Penny Sanders, from Martin & Co’s head office, is full of praise for the pair.
She said: “They have vast experience running their own business. The Martin & Co Wokingham office is perfectly placed to become a very successful franchise.”
The branch opened on Tuesday, September 22.
