Plans that will see a new dental surgery opening in Wokingham town centre have moved a step closer.
As revealed by Wokingham Today in July 2024, the freehold of the historic British Red Cross building in Denmark Street was purchased by Dr. Navdip S. Sandhu, after being used by the charity since at least the 1920s.
The building was used as an orthopaedic clinic for war veterans from the First World War. Historically, it was known as the Wokingham War Memorial Orthopaedic Clinic, evident from engraved plaque that is built into the front elevation of the building.
The more recent history is based on its use as offices by the British Red Cross – since circa 1980 – when the facilities became inadequate for orthopaedic surgeries.
Since then, the premises have been used by the Red Cross as regional headquarters.
The new owner, through his agents, has now applied to Wokingham Borough Council for permission to install advertising signage.
The application noted: “The proposed advertisements are associated with the forthcoming dental surgery use by Tranquil Dental.
“The main advertisement is a new wall sign to be located on a blank section of brick wall to the right of the windows, and facing Denmark Street.
“The sign will be 1450mm tall and 1100mm wide, and features a curved top design that references the curved lintels above the windows.
“The sign would be externally illuminated with a downlighter LED lamp. The window manifestations are self-adhesive stickers, and are not directly illuminated. They will be located in the lower panes of three of the windows facing Denmark Street.
“Four smaller signs will be mounded [two either side] of the front entrance door. These measure 530mm and 513mm in height and 300mm in width.
“Additionally, the memorial plaque and two right-hand windows will be illuminated by low level ‘uplighter’ LED lamps.”
A consultation into the plans to install signs will remain open until April 8, 2025.
