A TEAM of quizzers from Emmbrook have proved they have brains after beating the Eggheads.
Regulars from the Dog and Duck pub in Matthewsgreen Road appeared on the Jeremy Vine hosted gameshow on Monday, calling themselves Ducking and Diving.
Broadcast at 6pm, the show pitted a team of five against five of the greatest TV trivia champs of all time, including Judith Keppel, the first person to win £1 million in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Chris Hughes, who won Mastermind in 1983 and Brain of Britain in 2005.
Team captain Paul is a publishing manager who organises the Dog and Duck’s quiz.
He told Jeremy: “The rest [of the team] play in different teams … we’ve never played together before, it’s a new experience for us all.”
The five were playing for an £8,000 jackpot and took part in four rounds where one of the team faced off against an Egghead.

First up was retired IT manager Peter, who challenged Egghead Dave Rainford for arts and books. Sadly for the Dog and Duckers, it was the former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? contestant who won – his 13th victory in a row.

One man down, Adrian was next, taking on new Egghead Lisa Thiel for a geography round. A question on Australia proved once again to be Lisa’s achilles heel, and it was Adrian who returned to his team victorious.

Landlord Stephen took on Judith Keppel for a film and TV round, making some correct guesses to win, while Judith lost after failing to know which show started with the theme Joyful Pete (Sale of the Century in case you’re wondering).

Team captain Paul fell on his sword in a history round. Before he took on Chris Hughes he joked: “I’ll sacrifice myself as long as it’s 1975 to present day”.
However, Paul did well, taking the Egghead to a sudden death play-off, eventually succumbing to a tricky question about Second World War guerrilla forces.

With both Eggheads and challengers losing two people, the general knowledge finale was an even-handed affair and again headed to a sudden death play-off.

And the challengers’ decision to go second paid off, when the Eggheads stumbled over a question relating to the marriage of writer Philip Roth – guessing incorrectly meant that the £8,000 was coming to Emmbrook.

Congratulating the team, host Jeremy Vine said: “[You’re] proper quizzers, I can tell. You made it look so easy.
“You are officially cleverer than the Eggheads and you’ve proved they can be beaten. What a game!”
