The government will be conducting another test of the emergency alerts system today, Sunday, September 7.
While this system is designed to keep you safe by sending alerts directly to your mobile in an emergency, it can pose a risk to those with a secret phone to call for help in case of domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse charities have raised concerns that the loud alert could inadvertently reveal the presence of a hidden phone to an abuser, potentially putting victims at greater risk.
To address this, the government has issued guidance on how to opt out of these alerts.
Additional tips:
-
Make sure you know how to quickly silence your phone in case of an unexpected alert
-
Make sure your phone is well hidden and only accessible to you
-
Regularly check for updates from local authorities and domestic abuse charities for any new guidance
If you are in immediate danger, always call 999. For non-emergency support, call 101 for the police, or contact the Wokingham domestic abuse support service on 0118 402 1921.
