The Emmbrook School in Wokingham has celebrated its year nine team being crowned county/regional winners of the prestigious magistrates’ mock trial competition held in May 2025.
The competition, which invites students aged 12–14 to step into the shoes of magistrates, lawyers, defendants, victims, ushers, witnesses, and legal advisers, saw schools from across the region compete in a realistic courtroom experience. Emmbrook’s team impressed judges with their professionalism, preparation, and teamwork.
Last week, the team was formally presented with the winners’ shield during the year nine celebration assembly.
The event was graced by guests including the high sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire, Sean Taylor DL; Julia Hardy, justice of the peace and competition coordinator; and Mark Powell, justice of the peace and school liaison magistrate.
The high sheriff congratulated the students on their outstanding performance, incredible team work, praising their confidence and understanding of the justice system.
The victory builds on Emmbrook’s previous success as regional winners in 2023.
Headteacher Nick McSweeney said: “I am so incredibly proud of our students and staff.
“Their dedication, skill and resilience are a true example of our community.
“To win this prestigious event twice in three years is a truly remarkable achievement for any school.”
“The Emmbrook School community is immensely proud of its students’ achievement and the dedication they showed throughout the competition.”
