A BOROUGH music group will perform choral works by Haydn and Johann Sebastian Bach’s second son C.P.E Bach
Reading Haydn Choir will be joined by professional soloists and orchestra when they sing Haydn’s Maria Theresa Mass, and C.P.E Bach’s Magnificat, at their Autumn Concert.
Conductor for the event is Mandy Kesel, with accompanist Ian Westley.
The pieces span both the Baroque and Classical periods.
C.P.E Bach composed his Magnificat in 1749 in Berlin where he was a harpsichordist at the court of Frederick the Great.
It recalls his father’s Mass in B minor, which is thought to have served as a direct model for the piece .
Fifty years later Joseph Haydn composed his Maria Theresa Mass to be performed on the name day of his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy II of Austria’s wife Princess Maria Hermengilde.
Scored for solo quartet, chorus, strings, clarinets and trumpets, it unusually has no oboes, horns, flutes or bassoons; thought to be due to a lack of wind players then.
The group says both works are full of beautiful music and require a great deal of vocal gymnastics from the singers.
To hear the concert, people should make their way to St Joseph’s College, Upper Redlands Road, on Saturday, November 16.
The event begins at 7.30pm, with tickets available for £16, or £5 for under 19s
