WOODLEY UNITED started their league campaign in the Southern Region Division One North with a win over Eversley & California.
Boosted by the return of ex-players Sarah Lawrence and Michelle Quinn and debuts for Gemma Sims Jen Heine and Maddie Carter, Woodley were good value for the win.
Woodley’s back four was rarely troubled apart from one chance where Heine cleared to the unmarked Emma Bentall who put her twenty third minute wide of keeper Heine’s right goal post.
As early as the fourth minute May Hamblin attacked down United’s left wing and saw her shot blocked by the home keeper Teri Harfield-Brown’s legs.
A couple of minutes later the same player had a shot blocked for a corner kick.
Carter also had a shot blocked for a corner which Harfield-Brown did well to punch the resulting kick clear as Woodley continued to push forward.
Two minutes before half time good play between Ellen Surtees and Maddie Sawyer saw the later control the ball well but saw he shot drift wide of the upright.
Heine was called into action as early as the second minute of the second half to deny Rebekah Pantony
United responded with the dangerous Hamblin beating two players only to see her shot go wide while Becca Gooch had a shot blocked following a corner.
The deciding goal came in the 70th minute. A one-two between Quin and Sawyer saw Quinn pass to May on the left.
The tricky winger ran at the defence before shooting into the far right hand corner of the home goal.
Pantony put a cross into the Woodley penalty area late in the game that was comfortably cleared as Woodley saw out the game to start the season with a win.
