When the article got released last week I received as always, a few messages and even a couple of calls from readers. This is due to the column normally causing a reaction as it has emotive content: I always try to discuss.
On top of this I also received some awesome messages from readers of the digital edition that gets released on The Wokingham Paper’s website every Sunday morning too. I love the double release as for me it solidifies the information contained within that week’s specific focus.
The first hit of implementation is always the Thursday so get to the shop, buy the paper and scan the article then reread slowly all the key points.
The second hit of action reconfirmation is always a Sunday morning. I know the paper releases the digital version first thing Sunday morning and I always share the digital column around 10am from my Facebook page.
Therefore, please head over to The FUNdaMENTAL Coach page and keep the journey at the forefront of your mind.
Repetition is what it is all about.
So, this week, I am going to talk about inner dialogue, as promised, it’s going to get deep and its going to get personal so get involved and keep your future at the forefront of your mental awareness.
A quote I always like to mention is: “Don’t let your fear prevent you from your success.”
Another is: “Every day is a blank page, what can you do today and what can you do tomorrow?”
We all have a certain amount of Inner dialogue running through our minds.
A great source of information on this subject area is successconsciousness.com and they had the following to say about it:
“There is a continuous conversation going on in everyone’s head. A lot of energy, time and attention are wasted on discussing small unimportant incidents. This conversation goes on from the moment of waking until falling asleep.
“The inner dialogue continues while working, studying, reading, watching TV, talking, walking and eating. There is a constant judging of people, commenting on what is going on, planning, gossiping, and mental conversations with people you know or don’t know.
“These inner dialogues bring about a snowball effect. The more you conduct them, the more you become chained to them, unable to stop them. When the emotions are also evoked, more power, energy and attachment are added. This has an adverse effect on the behaviour, judgment and general performance. On many occasions, the inner dialogue is negative, and strengthens any negative attitude or behaviour.
“Most people do not have enough faith in themselves and in their abilities, and therefore, they allow their mind to engage in negative inner dialogues. The process and effect of these inner conversations is like affirmations.
“Constant thinking about the same subject, affects the subconscious mind, which consequently, accepts these thoughts and words and acts on them. Negative inner dialogues bring negative results, and positive inner dialogues bring positive results.”
However, you CAN use this process to your ADVANTAGE…
I coach my clients on two awesome tactics that you TOO can use to your advantage.
Like it says above, everyone has an inner dialogue but generally people have differing levels going on upstairs. Some people have a much higher percentage of positive inner dialogue occurring.
However, for some, this is not the case and they have a much higher negative percentage. Without going into detail, this is most commonly caused by evolution and the negativity bias we all possess. So, lets cover tactics one and two which are positive reframing and GOYA.
We have covered positive reframing before, but it really is a powerhouse. When the inner dialogue starts to run, think what positive reframe you could make out of it. For example, let’s say the thoughts going through your head at a particular moment include not feeling worthy.
Reframe that to calling a friend and arranging a meetup and taking your mind off it. This reframe from negativity to opportunity works a treat and will help lift your mood. Give it a go but remember it takes time and doing it just once won’t cause lasting change.
The second tactic…GOYA. So, what does GOYA stand for then?
GOYA stands for “Get Off You’re a**e”. When feeling a little bit low and the negative inner dialogue is starting to take over, get up and do something, TAKE ACTION.
Taking action and getting off your behind has been proven to be a great resource for changing your negative inner dialogue. Do this enough and you can change your state of mind exponentially. Start moving, go out for a run, do some sit-ups, create that Facebook post for work you’ve been meaning to do, read that book that has been gathering dust since Christmas, put the call into a loved one and tell them how much you appreciate them, buy your partner some flowers, write a journal entry, book a holiday … the options are endless … Just GOYA.
Inner Dialogue … think we have covered it this week, right?
Your homework this week is too get more aware of your thoughts and when you find yourself participating in the negative inner dialogue, I want you to use one of the tactics above to take control and own your state of mind.
Next week we will be discussing HAPPINESS and what the rest of the world can teach us about the subject and what we could all do to know it and therefore implement. Until then…
Happy Sunday, be you, be amazing, be happy and take ownership of the best resource you have … the grey matter inside of your head.
