AT THE Twyford Donkey Derby, as well as the usual long-eared fuzzy-nosed equine star attractions, there will also be Lions.
The donkey derby, a firm village fixture, is an annual event run by 1st Twyford Scouts and Twyford Together.
Now in its 29th year, it gives young riders aged 10 to 15 an opportunity to take part in a series of donkey races.
Aside from the racing, visitors will discover a wide range of stalls supporting local organisations, charities and businesses.
This year members of Wokingham Lions Club will be manning a stall as part of an initiative to encourage greener practices in the borough.
They will be collecting old bras, glasses, hearing aids, foreign coins and stamps to raise funds for charity.
The Lions are well known for running their own events, which include The May Fayre, The Winter Carnival, The Wokingham Walk, and Wokingham Classic Car Show.
But they also contribute to community events in other borough towns and villages, including Finchampstead, Twyford and Wargrave.
Wokingham Lions Club President, Andy Goffin said: “There is a local initiative to make Twyford, including the Donkey Derby, more environmentally friendly.
“Our stall will reflect this and have a focus on Wokingham Lions Club’s activity around The Environment, one of Lions International’s eight global causes.
“We’ll be collecting used spectacles, hearing aids, old or foreign coins, stamps, and old bras.
“These can all be sold, recycled or reused.
“And we’ll also be available to discuss what we do as a club, and how we serve our community and the wider world.”
The derby will also include traditional fairground attractions, and music from Maidenhead Concert Band.
Refreshments and homemade cakes will be available from the tea tent, and the Scouts will provide a barbecue.
The event will take place at King George’s Field, on Sunday, June 15, from 12:30pm until 5pm, with the first race at 1.30pm.
