Wokingham has its first ever Green party councillor with the news that Cllr Majid Nagra, who represents Loddon Ward on Wokingham borough council, has joined the group,
In a statement provided to Wokingham Today, the party said his decision to join the Greens reflects changing political alignments locally, and gives the party representation on the council, strengthening its position ahead of the upcoming local elections where they are preparing to stand candidates in every ward for the first time.
Cllr Nagra was elected as a Labour councillor in May 2024, but he left the Labour party to sit as an independent in September 2025.
Following discussions, on Monday joined the Green party, where the statement said he will continue to stand up and fight for the residents of Loddon ward, and the wider Wokingham borough.
Majid said: “We are facing multiple political and economic challenges, the politics of hate and division of the far right, the feeling of insecurity among our communities, the unrealistic economic policies of the Labour government and the threat to civil liberties and human rights under the Labour government.
“We are running short of time to face these challenges. Most of these challenges are created by the red Tories in Labour, and tactically exploited by the far right.
“Reform UK has become an important political force during the last twenty months, thanks to the anti-worker, anti- pensioner and anti-youth policies of the red Tories.
“I have joined the Green party because it has stood up for our communities, pensioners, disabled and young citizens.
“The Green party has given new and realistic hope to the left, progressive and young voters. “The Green party leadership has highlighted its concerns, regarding the genocide in Gaza while the Labour government has stated that ‘what Israel was doing in Gaza is not genocide.’
“Many voters of Loddon Ward who have voted for the Labour party throughout their lives are voting for the Green party on May 7, because they believe that the future of progressive politics belongs to core values and policies of the Green party.”
A Wokingham Green party spokesperson added: “We are delighted to welcome Majid as Wokingham’s first Green councillor and look forward to working with him.
“Locally, the Greens are the only party who will stand up for Wokingham and fight for our communities.
“This defection shows that the Wokingham Green party is a rapidly growing force for change in the borough.
“In the local elections in May, the Green Party will stand candidates in all 18 wards for the first time, giving every single resident of Wokingham their first real opportunity to vote for fairness, justice, and positive change in the area.”
A launch and community outreach event will be held at Woodley precinct on March 28 where Cllr Nagra and local Green party representatives will be attending.
