Wokingham Town football club celebrated its 150th anniversary last Sunday, with a ‘party on the pitch’ and evening entertainment from football legends.
The event at its Lowther Road home also saw music from Matt Bond and The Makeshifts, as well as a visit from several VIP guests, including MP Clive Jones, deputy town mayor Cllr Alwyn Jones, and Berks & Bucks Football Association president Bill Mcknight.
Jones presented the club with a copy of the parliamentary early day motion he presented in the House of Commons in April, officially congratulating the club on its 150th anniversary.
McKnight also presented the club with certificates from his association, as well as a congratulatory letter from the CEO of the Football Association.
Club captains Sean Moore and Emma Martin, and under-10s player Darcie representing the club’s youth section, received the accolades on behalf of the club.
The club was also joined by former West Ham and England legends Phil Parkes and Alan Devonshire, and a team of its former and current players and managers, including Bobby Purser, Micky Noad, Nicky Collier, Mark Harris, Matt Eggleston, Darren Barnard, Phil Alexander, Terry Brown, Ady Williams, and Roger Herridge.
Club president Mark Ashwell said: “We had an amazing day, and I’d like to thank everyone who came together to celebrate our momentous anniversary, to celebrate our achievements so far and to look forward to another 150 years.”
