ORGANISERS of a newly extended gardening service need volunteers to spruce up borough gardens.
Wokingham Volunteer Centre’s Green’n’Tidy gardening scheme supports older adults unable to keep their own lawns and flower beds in good shape.
Teams of volunteers take on gardening tasks that residents can’t tackle to keep their backyards in good shape.
Thanks to borough grants the group has been able to buy a second van, and double their capacity.
“It’s wonderful,” said gardening project co-ordinator Paul King.
“It means we can now reach 300 clients a week instead of 150.
“But we now need twice as many volunteers.”
The group is looking for people who love working outdoors, keen to make new friends while doing something practical and worthwhile.
“We have two of the five leaders we need,” said Mr King, “and need teams to work with them.
“These might be retirees, or young people between jobs.
“You don’t need to have any gardening experience, you just need to have a regular free morning to spare.”
The group is grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund, Earley Charity, Berkshire Community Foundation, Wokingham Lions Club, Wokingham United Charities, Stihl GB, and the Wokingham Community Safety Partnership, for enabling them to buy a second vehicle and expand their service.
