A GROUP of keen gardeners held their annual display of autumn squashes despite a downpour.
Wokingham Horticultural Association’s Pumpkin Festival took place on Sunday at the group’s trading store and garden room on Ormonde Road.
The morning brought unexpected heavy rain, but by the afternoon, with the sun putting in an appearance, organisers say the event was a great success.
“Given that the weather was appalling earlier in the day, everything turned out very well,” said Janet Gordon, membership secretary for the group.
“The turnout was pretty good despite the rain, and we had a very enjoyable afternoon, with a lovely hallowe’en display and some great exhibits.”
Awards were given for Specimen Flowers, Ornamental Foliage and Baked Items, with several classes for young exhibitors.
The pumpkin with the largest circumference, of 180cm, was won by Terry Miller, who also won the Young At Heart Decorated Pumpkin, made using seven types of pumpkin, and Two Of A Kind, created from a matching pair of cucurbit, or field pumpkims.
Charlotte Lambert won the Young Exhibitors Decorated Pumpkin, while her sister Jessica won the Young Exhibitors Decorated Bakes.
Ruby Royall won the Young Exhibitors Halloween Craft.
“Everyone, exhibitors and visitors alike, enjoyed the tea and homemade cakes,” said Ms Gordon.
