Residents of Hatch Farm Way in Sindlesham have been urgently evacuated after a nearby electricity pylon, struck by a falling tree, became dangerously unstable.
Work to make the tower safe has already caused a section of the M4, between junctions 10 and 11 to be closed today in both directions.
Wokingham Borough Council has said that Scottish Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is carrying out urgent repairs to the 132kV electricity tower on Hatch Farm Way, after it was damaged by a falling tree.
With high winds expected this evening National Highways closed the M4 while engineers battle to make the structure safe.
Now it has become necessary to evacuate residents from nearby Hatch Farm Way.
Hatch Farm Way, parallel to the M4, and close to the damaged pylon, is now also closed to traffic, due to the possibility that the pylon may fall.
Drivers should expect detours and delays, while residents’ and motorists’ safety is given priority.
Wokingham Borough Council is on emergency response alert.
