AN award-winning play by a local writer is set to have its amateur theatre debut in Wokingham this week.
Nell Gwynn, by Jessica Swale, won an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2016, and theatre-goers can now enjoy the brand new play courtesy of Wokingham Theatre from Tuesday.
Set in London in 1660, Nell Gwynn charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots in Coal Yard Alley to her success as Britain’s most celebrated actress and her hard-won place in the heart of the King. But at a time when women are second-class citizens, can her charm and spirit protect her from the dangers of the Court?
n The play opens at Wokingham Theatre on Tuesday, July 11 and runs until July 22. For more information visit crm.wokingham-theatre.org.uk.
