Wokingham’s Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Clive Jones photobombed a press conference by prime minister Rishi Sunak yesterday.
Jones, along with the Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper and Henley candidate Freddie Van Mierlo, sailed past the Leander Club while the prime minister was being interviewed by national broadcasters.
The stunt was later featured on several evening television news programmes. It has also appeared in some of today’s national newspapers, including The i and the Daily Mirror.
The club, on the banks of the River Thames, is part of the Wokingham constituency.
The party said their actions were to raise awareness of the party’s new plans for Blue Flag rivers.
In a statement, Wokingham Liberal Democrat’s said that after seeing Rishi Sunak’s election battle bus parked in the Leander Club, they jumped into action.
Clive said: “We took the opportunity to sail past in order to raise awareness of our bold new manifesto commitment to clean up rivers and coastlines.
“The river marks the boundary between our two constituencies, and we know how upset residents are by the constant dumping of sewage in our rivers.
“This is another small boat Rishi Sunak can’t deal with.
“There’s no rowing back from his record on soaring NHS waiting lists and rivers ruined by sewage.”
The prime minister, who was with the new Wokingham Conservative candidate Lucy Demery, appeared to be unaware of the incident at the time.
He later posted on social media saying: “Classic Lib Dems, always selling voters down the river.”
