Reading fell to an opening game defeat in the Championship as they were beaten 3-1 by Sheffield Wednesday.
Jose Gomes reiterated that he is still keen for the club to bring in more players with just two days of the transfer window remaining as he looks to rebuild his squad.
On the game…
“Both teams start playing but studied the opponent at the same time, in some moments we played better than them and some moments they showed good things. The moment we conceded the first goal we didn’t deserve it for how we played.
We offered the chance to them. One minute later after we scored we conceded again so if you look at the game, we cannot say they were better than us but they used very well the chances they created or the chances we offered them. And in football if you score more, you win.
We are in the beginning of a long season, but we need to fix as soon as possible the mistakes we showed and for sure in the next game they will perform better than they did today.
The fans were fantastic and deserved a better result.
My players didn’t deserve to go to the changing room losing 1-0. But its football, we must score the chances we have and be better in our defensive organisation.”
On the handball penalty claim…
“I understand the booing because in that moment if we core we could talk about a different result, but if I talk now about the ref it looks like I’m trying to find excuses for the result. I want to put the focus on my team and players to help them improve and not make the same mistakes, otherwise I can lose my focus because this result canot be changed.
The ball touched the arm. It’s so difficult to put the focus in the things I can control, if I lose my focus for things I cannot control I lose everything.
I must look to my players, study the game and help them in the next week to be better against Hull.”
Bringing more players in before the window shuts…
“I would like to, I expect to, it is possible.
To be promoted, we don’t have enough goals in the team right now.
I know my board of directors having been doing everything to solve this problem. I think during the next three days something will happen.
Our focus right now is for a striker and maybe one midfielder more. We need to score so our focus is In those positions.”
The defensive performance…
“Even if we score one goal like we scored today we can’t concede the goals we did today, I can help the players to be stronger. Of course if we have more players that score more goals, the chances you score increase so that’s what we will try to do until the market closes.”
On new signing Lucas Boye…
“He is ready for next week, we will see how he is during the week and if he’s ready to play. He can play a number of positions, striker, second striker winger. Argentine blood player. His main position is a striker. Because he’s young and has energy he has been used as a winger.”
On Charlie Adam…
“I think he gave good things to the game. The way he touched the ball and some very good long passes. He gave positive things to the game.”
Message to the fans…
“We will achieve our targets. If in the last two days we rebuild the squad and I feel we have the players we need to fight for promotion I will assume that. If we don’t we will fight for the best position we can and for sure we will stay in the championship. Even if we don’t bring in anyone more.
We need the support of our fans for the upcoming games. We need them again to help push the players.”
