A meeting is set to take place next week to review the license of a Woodley convenience store.
Wokingham borough council’s licensing and appeals sub committee will consider the review for Brecon Food and Wine in The Parade, Brecon Road, on Wednesday, May 21.
Notes to the virtual meeting from Trading Standards and Thames Valley Police indicate the business has failed test purchases made by under aged children, and it is currently under investigation for selling counterfeit vodka which has been described as being “injurious” to health, as well as vodka where no duty had been paid.
The business also had illegal e-cigarettes seized in 2023.
A total of 11 reports from concerned members of the public had also been received.
Several neighbours have written in support of the business.
One noted: “I and my family are regular customers of Brecon food and wine and have been since we have lived in Woodley (just over three years).
“I visit regularly for everyday items as it is the closest shop to me and happily take my children in the shop.
“The staff are always extremely friendly and greet me and my family professionally.”
Another said: “I have been a regular patron of this store for seven years, and have consistently found them to be a responsible and reputable business within our community. “Contrary to the site notice placed on the Parade notice board, I have personally witnessed staff diligently checking identification and refusing the sale of age-restricted items, including alcohol and Vapes, to young individuals who appeared to be underage.”
Options available to the committee are to modify the conditions of the licence (permanently, or for a period not exceeding three months, to exclude a licensable activity from the scope of the licence permanently, or for a period not exceeding three months, to remove the designated premises supervisor, to suspend the licence for a period not exceeding three months, to revoke the licence, to issue formal warnings to the designated premises supervisor and/or premises licence holder, or to take no action.
