Year 3, Evendons School
On Wednesday the 27th September Evendons Primary school has its first ever vegan day.
We invited a group of vegans from Animal Aid in so that we could all learn about being a vegan and looking after animals all over the country.
The first activity was food tasting. We tried six different food types, one was vegan and the other wasn’t, it had animal products in it.
The foods were: fish fingers, strawberry yogurt, butter on crackers, burgers, cream cheese and custard. There was a little chart next to each food and you had to choose which one you preferred but you didn’t know which one was vegan and which one wasn’t. I was surprised how similar they tasted.
When we were sketching vegan and non vegan items I discovered two very interesting things.
Number one was that fish scales are used in nail varnish to make it nice and shiny.
Number 2 was that crayons have animal products in them and so does the new five pound note.
We also took part in some debating activities: you went to one side of the room if you agreed with the teacher and the other side of the room if you disagreed. It was fun listening to what other people’s opinions were.
Four people from Animal Aid came to the school and ran a wrap making competition.
First we went to tables set out in the hall, next we wrote our names on a piece of card and then we made our wraps using vegetables and hummus.
Once we had finished a mystery judge came out, it was Sally, she went around the tables and looked at all the wraps.
In year 3 it was Emily’s table who won. We then got to eat our lovely wraps or we could take them home to eat later.
During the day a storyteller came to Evendons and brought lots of bean bags for us to sit on.
She told us 3 stories and sang 2 songs.
She brought puppets and toys with her and the stories were all about animals, We all enjoyed listening to the stories. We also made art with raw fruit and vegetables with Patrick.
We all enjoyed learning about being a vegan and discovered lots of new things.
