A BOROUGH woman running in the London marathon has already beaten her fundraising target, writes James Hastings.
Liz Karsten is taking part in the world famous event for the Yeldall Manor drug rehabilitation centre.
She had hoped to raise £750 but has already overtaken that with a total so far of £855 with more than two weeks to go to the race.
Liz said she decided to run the marathon in aid of Yeldall because “I am crazy and it is an amazing cause.”
Writing on her Fundraiser Page, she explained: “I have been a supporter of Yeldall Manor for a good twenty plus years now and seen how it has changed so many people’s lives. I have friends that have been through the programme and who’s lives have been transformed by it and also friends who work there in various different roles.”
She added: “So many national charities are fighting to get you to raise funds for them and although they are all good causes I really wanted to choose a charity that doesn’t get the exposure that these big names do and also one that means something to me personally.
“By sponsoring me for my epic run you will be supporting this fund, and enabling more men to access Yeldall’s programmes and have the chance of a new life.
“No donation is too small. Every penny counts and will be gratefully received by me and Yeldall Manor.”
Liz is raising funds for the Hare Hatch centre’s Good Samaritan Bursary Fund which covers the cost for those unable to pay the fees or obtain statutory funding.
Sue Hedger, Yeldall’s supporter relations manager said it offered a lifeline to many men looking to access the centre.
“For 40 years, we have been helping men to overcome serious drug or alcohol addictions and return to society to live new lives, drug, alcohol and crime free.
“It costs around £600 a week for one person to attend Yeldall. After the first 12 to 24 weeks, the cost is met by housing benefit.
“The bursary fund is there to help those who are unable to pay themselves or secure funding from a local authority.
“The money Liz is raising could literally save someone’s life. We are really grateful for her support.”
