Quick thinking on the part of an HGV driver prevented tragedy this morning.
The driver, who has asked not to be named, said he was driving south along Mole Road, between Parkcorner Lane and the former Bearwood Riding Centre when the accident occurred just before 9am this morning (Wednesday).
He said that by taking action to avoid an oncoming car which was partly on his side of the road, the HGV moved to the left such that the wheels left the carriageway.
Encountering a dip then a hump, the HGV was rolled onto its side and came to a stop some 50 yards further on. The second oncoming driver managed to avoid a collision by taking action that put their vehicle off the road and on its side.
Neither driver was seriously injured in this incident, which was attended by Police and a TRL Collision Investigation unit.
The first driver left the scene of the accident.
Workmen from Balfour Beatty working on resurfacing Mill Lane assisted with clearing up and Mole Road was reopened to through traffic at mid-day.
A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8.43am with the caller reporting a lorry having tipped over on to it side on Mole Road, knocking a car on to its side in the process.
“An ambulance was at the scene and the crew have reported that both drivers have fortunately only sustained minor injuries.”
