A BOROUGH repair cafe is celebrating having reached an important milestone.
Woodley Repair Cafe has been counting the fixes it carries out and calculates that since it began in January 2024 the group has managed to save 700 items from landfill, and has saved countless residents needlessly spending money on replacements.
Reusing and mending also avoids adding to the amount of CO2 involved in the manufacture of new goods.
“The Woodley Repair Cafe team was absolutely delighted to reach 700 repaired items since we began,” said Carol Jewell, who runs the repair cafe.
“We had lots of repairs this month.
“It’s great to see people choosing to extend the life of their tools and appliances instead of taking them to the tip.”
Repair Cafés are free ‘community-centred workshops’ for people to bring items in need of repair.
People are able to work with volunteers who can help them repair and maintain their broken or faulty items.
Repair cafés can also help with clothing repairs, for example fixing a zip.
And they contribute to a sustainable, thriving community where repair expertise is valued and passed on, where raw materials are used in a responsible way and where people can meet and get to know one another.
Woodley Repair Cafe meets at Christ Church, Crockhamwell Rd, Woodley on the first Sunday of every month from 2pm until 4pm.
The next event will be on Sunday, November 2, when people can just turn up.
