A new equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) policy for Wokingham borough council has moved a step closer.
Last week, the council’s executive voted to recommend the council adopt the policy, along with updated equality objectives, for the period 2025 to 2029.
That is expected to happen at Thursday’s meeting of the full council.
The EDI policy and objectives are designed to foster a thriving community in Wokingham borough, where residents have access to inclusive services, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
The EDI policy outlines Wokingham borough council’s commitment to compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty, ensuring fairness, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all.
Once adopted, the council intends to ensure its policy is integrated into procurement and contract management, with its suppliers being contractually obliged to comply with EDI, and with the Equality Act 2010.
Under the specific duties of the act, public bodies are required to establish clear, measurable equality objectives every four years.
In alignment with these requirements, Wokingham borough council has collaborated and consulted with residents, community partners, staff network groups, and its workforce to develop a new equality policy and updated equality objectives for the period until 2029.
The policy will be presented at this week’s full council meeting.
