Wokingham borough council has said it will no longer be monitoring its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.
On July 1 it posted: “We’re no longer active on X and our account will not be monitored from 1 July 2025.”
The post directed users to its website, email newsletters, and to its other social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Linkedin, TikTok and NextDoor.
The account was followed by more than 13,900 users.
Asked for reasons why it is withdrawing from the popular social media channel, a spokesperson for the council told Wokingham Today: “Everything is in the post on X/Twitter.”
Wokingham Today understands the decision was taken because usage of the channel had dropped to a point where the council no longer considered it to be a productive use of staff time and resources, which will now be used to develop other channels with the aim of reaching target audiences it is currently not reaching.
