A BOROUGH fundraising group will be ramping up efforts to support The Rotary Club’s international children’s health campaign this week.
The Rotary Club of Wokingham is hosting events in Wokingham town centre to support and highlight its End Polio Now campaign.
Two weekend activities will compliment World Polio Day, which is on Thursday October 24, and both involve flowers.
At a market stall in Wokingham Market Place, the group will be offering crocus corms and narcissi bulbs in exchange for a donation on Saturday, October 26, from 9am until 3pm.
And the following day, volunteers from the Rotary Club will gather in Elms Field, Wokingham on Sunday, October 27 at 10am, to plant more crocuses and narcissi, building on the floral display created by last year’s planting.
James Berkeley from the Wokingham club said: “These flowers not only beautify the town but also stand as a visual reminder of the Rotary’s ongoing commitment to eradicating polio.
“After planting an initial batch in October 2023, we’re hoping for better weather and will be complimenting the purple crocuses with yellow narcissi this year.”
Crocuses have become symbols of the End Polio Now campaign, representing the purple dye that’s put on the smallest finger of every child that receives the polio vaccine.
The Rotary Club of Wokingham says the vibrant purple flowers act as a reminder that the preventable disease can be eradicated with enough joint effort from communities around the world.
Everyone in the community is encouraged to join or support these initiatives.
