Plans have been approved that will see a 150-year-old sports clubhouse replaced.
Hurst Bowling Club had submitted plans to demolish its existing clubhouse building, and replace it with a structure that will allow the club to continue.
Documents submitted to Wokingham Borough Council in support of the application said: “There is an ongoing need for new accommodation to allow the bowling club to continue to operate and welcome new members.
“However, the current clubhouse is in a poor state of repair and suffers from water damage.
“Over the recent years, all that could be done to the building is to slow the rate of decay, as some of the timber has rotted.
The plans sought to replace the existing clubhouse to allow for continuation of bowling on the site that dates from the 18th century.
The plans were said to take “.. careful consideration was given to the historic context and location of the clubhouse.
“The proposed design follows local materials and built form, in order to reflect and enhance the setting and character of the area, whilst providing a modern, efficient building for the Hurst Bowling Club and other community uses as required.”
The club said there has been an ongoing need to replace the existing clubhouse as it has slowly dilapidated over time.
Approval for the new clubhouse will make the site more accessible, as level thresholds would allow for the use and enjoyment of space for the wheelchair users.
Legend has it that the first bowling green was laid for King Charles 1, who stayed at the adjacent Castle Inn when hunting in Windsor forest.
There is also documentary evidence that famous England cricketer and all-round sportsman Dr. W. G. Grace played on the green.
The club has a photograph of him with his team during play, and a letter in his hand challenging the club to a match.

Council officers approved the plans on July 3.
