A BOROUGH speech maker is the toast of his fellow club members, after his outstanding achievement at the national District Competition D91 (the national finals for public speaking).
Danny Wang, a member of Wokingham Speakers beat the best speakers from 170 other Toastmaster Clubs to take first place in the national competition, held at London South Bank University, at the end of November.
Danny’s performance was described as having ‘confidence, presence, and perfect delivery’ – and a ‘well-deserved win’.
His success is even more impressive because he is a newcomer to public speaking.
“Nine months ago, I was a complete beginner, who cluelessly walked into his local club to stop shaking and stuttering in front of people,” he said.
“It doesn’t feel real that I ended up on a stage competing with the best, talking to over 150 people AND coming first.
“This win doesn’t feel like ‘my’ win – it feels like a club, mentor, and community win.
“Toastmasters has given me more support and belief than I could have imagined.”
Wokingham Speakers meets twice monthly to build members’ confidence in public speaking and leadership.
Speakers learn by doing, preparing speeches, and evaluating each other’s contributions through supportive feedback.
The group includes people from all walks of life, occupations and ages, all keen to improve their public communications and leadership skills.
They meet at the Bradbury Centre, Wokingham, on the first and third Tuesday of each month.
