As the British summer draws to a close, what better way to welcome in the chilly autumn evening than to spend a night in Provence?
Upon entering the Mill’s theatre, the soft lighting, stylish set – by veteran designer Terry Parsons – and gentle music combined to transport the audience to a place of sheer relaxation.
This was the hope and expectation of each of the three couples in this play, written by Robin Hawdon, until confusion with the agent caused the two British couples to share their holiday villa with the French owners.
Chaos, humour and romance result, with a smattering of topical Brexit jokes. No plot twists here, just 6 talented actors clearly having a fantastic time.
Laila Alj is brilliant as Yvette, stubbornly refusing to accept her unexpected house guests, before seemingly softening to the charms of the laddish Fred, played by Mark Pearce.
Adrian Irvine as the dashing Maurice was perfectly suave with a beautifully polished French accent as he woos the virtuous Moira (Janine Leigh).
The raw passion between Judy (Amber Edlin) and Shaun (Dan March) was suitably overdone as the couple reveal the discontent in their respective marriages.
Not one for the prudish – sexual tension and innuendo abound, as the characters flirt outrageously with each other before finally coming to their senses. A fun evening out.
A Night in Provence runs at the Mill until November 17.
