Epic run will raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK
Richard Earls’ Dad means the world to him – and he’s run around the globe to show it.
The businessman from Wokingham has clocked up nearly 250 miles to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Richard’s job takes him to exotic locations and he uses the trips to add to his target for the charity’s Run Down Dementia campaign.
So far he has jogged through New York, Amsterdam, France and Mexico to raise £1,163.
Now, with his target of £1,250 in his sights, Richard hopes people in the borough will sponsor him for that final push.
“I have until the end of August reach my target so you could say I am on the home stretch,” said Richard.
“I am asking people to sponsor me for this final leg. I want to thank everyone who has supported me so far.
“I am determined to meet my target.”

Richard’s Dad, Jim, 85, who suffers Alzheimer’s has strong links with Wokingham and Bracknell.
He was instrumental in forming Scout troops in Wokingham and local swimming clubs.
“In 1964, dad was involved in setting up the 1st Emmbrook Scout Group and became the 1st Cub Scout Leader,” added Richard.
“He was soon running two Cub Packs and demand for places was high but as usual there was a shortage of leaders.
“Later he became Assistant District Commissioner for the Cubs, eventually taking on the position of District Commissioner for Wokingham.
“He still attends many functions throughout the year.
“He was also heavily involved with Bracknell Swimming Club, as chairman, while they were involved with negotiating terms for moving from Broad Lane to the new pool at Bracknell Sports Centre.
“He is now 85-years-old and is in good health apart from suffering from Alzheimer’s.
“He regularly attends Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Singing for the Brain and he goes to three Day Centres in the area.”
Richard says he only took up running after being inspired by his wife’s cousin, Rachel Bishop, whose mum also has the disease.
“She has just completed 1,000km for the cause.

“When I was at school, I hated sports and only started running for this campaign.
“It has been wonderful running an average of 12 miles at a time in places such as New York and Amsterdam.
“I am determined to reach my target and encourage other people to think of signing up.”
