Do you know the most likely places in Wokingham Borough where you are statistically more likely to be involved in a road accident involving an injury?

Wokingham Borough Council’s Local Safety Scheme list is used to study the occurrence of personal injury collisions, and to take preventative measures to reduce the possibility of casualties on roads in the Borough. This includes collision investigation, prevention and safety audits.

The council has assessed all road traffic accidents that have an injury associated with it over the last five years.

Some common examples of causations have been included, such as drivers speeding or even being under the influence of drink and drugs.

The list helps to identify specific locations where there are clusters of accidents resulting in injuries (three or more accidents in a 50 metre radius)..

The council also uses police records to identify if there is a common cause attributed to these accidents, such as a specific junction where those turning right are regularly involved in a collision.

A spokesperson for Wokingham Borough Council said: “We use this information to identify the roads that need assessing as part of a local safety scheme.

“This list is a working document that is updated regularly as and when assessments are carried out.

“It lists the roads that have clusters of accidents that have an injury associated with it and therefore constantly changes.”

“Each local authority must, in line with the Road traffic Act, prepare and carry out a programme of measures designed to promote road safety.

“In doing this, the council carries out reviews of its Personal Injury Accident data for a 5-year period to determine specific locations.

“Works that may be identified through this process are known as Local Safety Schemes. It is important to look at the data so we can make sure our roads remain safe.”
