AN OPPORTUNITY to buy spring bulbs is coming to Wokingham town centre later this month, and it’s all in a good cause.
The Rotary Club of Wokingham is to set up stall in Market Place, where they will collect donations and sell crocus bulbs and glow products as part of its End Polio Now campaign.
The club is part of a worldwide movement, and its core aim is to see the disease wiped out – and it is nearly there.
When it launched the campaign, there were more than 1,000 cases a day in 125 countries. The disease paralysed and killed children.
Now, case numbers are down by 99.9%, the goal is in sight.
The stall, on Saturday, November 25, will help raise more funds and awareness of the campaign.
It follows on from a Sunday morning last month, where volunteers braved torrential rain to plant nearly 3,000 purple crocus bulbs in Elms Field. They will flower in the spring.
Help for the planting was given by members of the Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We are continuing the campaign by sharing the crocus bulbs with the residents of Wokingham in return for a donation.
“We hope you will join us in raising awareness and helping to eradicate this debilitating disease from the globe.”
