AN ORGANISER behind a youth choir says that singing can help participants feel more relaxed, and reduce their anxiety.
Suzanne Newman, who runs The Project Singers, cites the 2018 Sing Your Heart Out project, which showed that participants improved their mental health, mood and sense of wellbeing after joining singing groups.
But, she continues, mental health in teenagers has declined since the covid pandemic started, with more than a quarter said they felt anxious most of the time and nearly a third have trouble sleeping.
Ms Newman says she has places available for girls in school years 5 to 13.
“As well as developing musical talents and experiencing the joy that singing brings, I’ve seen how being in a choir can help girls feel more calm, positive and focused,” she says.
“The Project Singers rehearses on a Sunday evening.
“Parents tell me that it’s a great way to round off the weekend and put girls in a relaxed frame of mind for the new school week, after a pleasurable evening of making music together.”
The singers have just re-commenced for the autumn, and are preparing for a Home For Christmas concert in Caversham on Saturday, December 17.
