PUPILS at a Wokingham junior school welcomed a special visitor and learned about civic life.
When town Mayor Cllr Louise Timlin, accompanied by Mace Bearer David Dunham, arrived to meet St Paul’s CofE Junior School’s Junior Leadership Team, there was much excitement, and many questions to be answered.
A group of democratically elected representatives from each of the school’s 12 classes gathered eagerly to learn more about civic leadership and the role of the Mayor within the local community.

“The children were captivated as Cllr Timlin described her duties, from chairing council meetings to representing Wokingham at a wide range of public events, said headteacher Julieanne Taylor.
“Many were surprised to discover just how busy the Mayor’s schedule can be — often involving several engagements a day, including at least one on Christmas Day.”
Pupils took the opportunity to ask a wide range of thoughtful questions, including: “What do you do when you’re not being the Mayor?” and: “What promises did you make in your speech?”
Their curiosity sparked a lively and engaging discussion, with children drawing on both their prepared questions and spontaneous ideas inspired by the conversation.

“One of the highlights of the visit was learning about the history and symbolism of the Mayor’s ceremonial chain,” said the headteacher.
“David’s explanation of his role as mace bearer — ensuring the safety and proper care of both the Mayor and the chain — added a fascinating historical dimension to the morning.
“Pupils hung on the mayor’s every word, leaving the session with a far deeper understanding of how local democracy works and the importance of civic responsibility.”

Before departing, Cllr Timlin extended a generous invitation for the St Paul’s Junior Leadership Team to visit Wokingham Town Hall and hold one of their meetings in its historic council chamber.
“The children are already looking forward to seeing the heart of local government in action and experiencing for themselves a building that has played such a central part in the town’s history,” Ms Taylor added.
“The visit proved to be an inspiring and memorable experience — one that may well encourage Wokingham’s next generation of community leaders.”
