Thames Valley Police have confirmed that reports on social media of an alleged sexual assault in Bracknell ‘appear to be fake’.
Posts emerged on social media in the past few days alleging that a young girl had been sexually assaulted in Bracknell, however TVP have now clarified that the alleged incident has not been reported to the police.
Thames Valley Police released a statement which reads: “Thames Valley Police can confirm that an alleged sexual assault, details of which have been circulating on social media, have not been reported to the force and appear to be fake.
“We would always urge anyone who is a victim, or knows someone who is a victim, of a sexual offence to report it to us.
“You can call 101 or make a report online or call 999 in an emergency.
“If you wish to remain anonymous, you can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
“Victims of sex offences have the right to lifelong anonymity so please be diligent when sharing information online. It is against the law for anyone to share information that could identify a victim of a sexual offence. This includes sharing information on social media.
“We would like to reiterate that residents should remain cautious when reading and sharing misinformation on line, especially on local social media groups, where information is not always verified.
“This fake report has caused concern in the community, as such we have been working closely with partners to ensure our residents are safe.”
