A BOROUGH school is keen to share its commitment to outdoor learning.
The Coombes CE Primary School has been running outdoor learning, forest school classes and swimming lessons, and is soon to open up toddler swimming sessions to the community.
Nestled in the heart of Arborfield, The Coombes aims to be not only a place of academic learning but a thriving hub of outdoor education, where children can engage in hands-on learning.
Whether exploring the school’s woodland areas, investigating local wildlife in ponds or applying science and learning cookery skills in a purpose-built STEM room, pupils are able to develop a deep connection with nature while enhancing their academic and personal development.
Rachel Winter, environmental lead at the school, said: “Children thrive when they are given the opportunity to learn in nature.
“Our forest school sessions provide them with a sense of adventure, freedom, and responsibility, helping to build confidence and independence.
“We see them flourish in ways that traditional classroom learning alone cannot always achieve.”
The school’s forest school programme plays a central role in its ethos.
Led by experienced practitioners, pupils can take part in activities such as den-building, fire-lighting, tool use, and nature-based crafts, which promote resilience, creativity, and teamwork—essential skills that extend beyond the classroom.
The school also benefits from a dedicated ECO room, a music room, and a swimming pool, ensuring that pupils have access to a well-rounded and dynamic curriculum.
Headteacher Mr. Luke Henderson said: “We are incredibly proud of our outdoor learning provision.
“We recognise the impact that time spent in nature has on children’s well-being, curiosity, and academic progress.
“Our school grounds are an extension of our classrooms, and we make full use of them to inspire a lifelong love of learning.”
The school says its strong commitment to fostering a love for nature and the environment, and its outdoor facilities and learning opportunities provide an exceptional experience for all its pupils.
It also encourages a love of learning, whether children are discovering minibeasts in the undergrowth, taking part in hands-on science experiments, or developing water confidence in the school pool.
For parents seeking a school where children are encouraged to learn beyond the four walls of a classroom, The Coombes says it offers an education like no other.
