READING FC WOMEN’s manager Kelly Chambers believes that the Women’s Super League relegation fight is in her team’s hands ahead of their meeting with Brighton on Sunday.
The Royals sit just two places and three points above the drop zone going into this weekend’s game against fellow strugglers Brighton, who are two points behind Reading but with two games in hand.
“I don’t need to heighten the game,” said Chambers.
“The players and staff know what these next two weeks are about and it’s about making sure we are ready.
“The job is in our hands and it’s ours to throw away right now. It is huge. It’s two games playing teams in and around us.
“It will be an ultra competitive game. You’ve got two teams fighting for the same thing.
“There’s a job in hand that we want to get done. We’re leading that little pack at the bottom so we want to stay there.”
Despite being in the midst of a difficult period at the club, Chambers is determined to continue striving for improvements ahead of two crucial games for Reading’s future.
After Sunday’s game with Brighton, Reading are away against bottom side Leicester City next weekend.
Chambers continued: “The club understands the situation we are in. There will be teams in and around the bottom and expect us to be down there because we are Reading competing against Premier League teams.
“It’s nice to know I’ve got the backing and we need to use every bit of time with the players to make the team better.
“The club as a whole are in a tough period at the moment. I’ve pushed every season and that’s what I’ll continue to do because that’s what I want for the women’s set up.
“The biggest thing that hit the club was covid and that hit every EFL club quite hard.
“Before that we were striving to grow every season and that took us back a little bit so we’re in a growth period at the moment.
“Some people might say we have overachieved which we might have if you compare budgets.
“We know where we are and how difficult it can be to compete. We pride ourselves on making sure we have a team that can compete.”
