A NEW 95-room hotel was opened in Wokingham’s town centre on Friday, November 15, by the borough mayor.
A large crowd gathered to take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, see the rooms and enjoy a glass of Prosecco.
Cllr Bill Soane gave a short address to welcome the company to the new Elms Field development.
“I am delighted to be here this morning,” he said. “We welcome Premier Inn to Wokingham town – this is the second new Premier Inn to be opened in our borough, having just completed the Winnersh hotel.
“The local area is growing rapidly and the council decided to take a lead in regenerating and improving the town by developing key areas including Peach Place with its new shops and public square, and here in Elms Field, with the opening of the new Aldi, Everyman cinema and a popular new play area.”
He added: “There is still much to be done, including the building of a new leisure complex, due to start in the summer of 2020.
“This new Premier Inn is a much-needed addition to Wokingham, the town is the home of many national and international businesses and these businesses have long been concerned with the lack of good accommodation locally and have had to go out of town to meet the need.”
Cllr Soane added that he has been a regular visitor to Premier Inn while travelling the country.
“I can speak personally … knowing that a good night’s sleep is guaranteed. I didn’t need Lenny Henry to tell me.”
The hotel includes a restaurant and bar, called Thyme. Its menu includes a Tastes of Asia section, including a tandoori chicken burger and a Thai green curry as well as Chinese-style sticky ribs.
Other dishes include fish and chips, gammon steak and greek salad. There is also freshly made pizzas available and burgers.
There are also a range of gins and drinks available.
Premier Inn is raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital and at its launch, it included a raffle and a cake sale.
