FOOTBALL’S coming home … and so are the workers at the local recycling centres.
Re3, which runs the centres in Reading and Bracknell, will be closing early to enable its workforce to get home and watch the crucial World Cup semi-final against Croatia.
On Wednesday, July 11, the sites will close at 6pm – and if England make it through to the final, they will close at 3pm on Sunday.
The re3 centres are run jointly between Reading, Wokingham Borough and Bracknell Forest councils and they said that with millions set to watch the game, it made sense to have an earlier closure of both recycling centres to encourage residents and employees alike to roar England to success in Russia.
The affected centres are in Longshot Lane, Bracknell and Island Road, Reading.
In a joint statement, Bracknell Forest’s Executive Member for Environment and Chairman of the Joint Waste Disposal Board, Cllr Mrs Dorothy Hayes MBE, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Councillor for Neighbourhoods and Communities Cllr Sophia James, and Wokingham Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environment Cllr Norman Jorgensen, said: “England has their best chance in decades to lift the World Cup and for many football fans this is the first time they’ve ever seen the national team so close to bringing the trophy home.
“We understand that for some residents, shortened opening hours at the recycling centres might be slightly inconvenient but we also want to ensure that no-one needs to rush to be home in time for kick-off and to allow our hard-working staff to watch England in action.
“So take a break from DIY and gardening, get yourself settled, cross your fingers and enjoy the excitement.
“We also want to use this opportunity to urge fans to celebrate responsibly and send a kind reminder to recycle all empty glass bottles and drink cans, by placing them where they belong, in the bottle banks or home recycling bins.”
