There was a large turnout of Conservatives in Winnersh on Saturday morning.
Four former Tory MPs were lending their support to Nick Kilby, their candidate for Thursday’s by-election.
Among them was Penny Mordaunt, the former leader of the house of commons, and two-time challenger for leadership of the Conservative party.
She is no stranger to the area, having graduated from Reading University.
She told Wokingham Today that it’s a mix of local and national issues that are raised on the doorsteps during canvassing for local council elections.
She said: “I think the nice thing about some national politicians coming out and canvassing is that we can pick up any national issues.
“We’re here to answer people’s questions, but most importantly we are here to listen.”
Speaking about her party’s candidate, Nick Kilby, she said: “I think he’s an amazing guy.
“He’s built a business, he does a lot for the community, and I think we want to support local people running in elections, and doing good things locally.”
Penny was joined on the streets of Winnersh by former local MPs Sir John Redwood and James Sunderland, and Nicola Richards, a former MP from the West Midlands.
They were supported by Conservative councillors and supporters.
Nick told Wokingham Today: “My thanks go to Penny, John, James and Nicola for supporting me in the Winnersh by-election.
“It’s fantastic they want to listen to residents as much as I do.”
Other candidates standing in the Winnersh by-election on Thursday are Chetna Jamthe (Liberal Democrats), Samuel Langlois (Greens) and Parvinder Singh (Labour).
