A SOCIAL club set up to help soldiers returning from the First World War is looking for new members. The Twyford Snooker Club is holding an open day on November 11 after the annual Remembrance service. The club was gifted to men in the village in 1919 by the then vicar. He hoped it would be a place they could share and relax in after the war. However the building, which is 165 years old, fell into disrepair and a £56,000 appeal was launched to save it from crumbling. Club secretary, Malcolm George, said: “The hall was a former Methodist chapel but it was gifted to the men of Twyford and over the years ladies were also admitted. “The first thing that needed done was a new roof and other exterior work has now made it watertight. We have raised about half of the money we need and are now working on the interior.” Anyone over 16 can apply for membership and are given their own key. “We extend an open invitation for people to come and see for themselves on Sunday, November 11 from noon until 3pm,” added Malcolm. “There will be tea and light refreshments. Our aim is to have the building brought right up-to-date by July next year which will mark the 100th anniversary of it being donated to Twyford.”
