A spate of vandalism in Wokingham town centre has caused more than £1,000 worth of damage, but Wokingham Town Council is hopeful that CCTV cameras will have captured the culprits.
Katy Hughes, town clerk, told Wokingham Today: “We believed the vandalism happened on Saturday evening, as we had volunteers working in Howard Palmer Gardens during the afternoon.
Planters were upended, plants were pulled out of the ground and saplings were cut in the town centre park.
Nearby Langborough Road recreation ground.
Katy said: “We have had four trees literally snapped in half.”
It is hoped several of the less-damaged plants and trees can be salvaged and replanted, but it will take time.
Wokingham Town Council reported the incident to Thames Valley Police on Sunday. It is hopeful that CCTV cameras in Cockpit Path may have captured the offenders, given its proximity to Howard Palmer Park.
“We will be in touch with Wokingham Borough Council to see if we are able to review the footage,” Katy added.
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson told Wokingham Today: “We received a report of criminal damage of a tree and a large tower planter in Wokingham.
“The report has been filed pending further information coming to light.
“Anyone with further information should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43240067109.”
The spokesperson added: “We did have another report of criminal damage of a gate that backs onto Langborough recreation ground from an address in South Drive sometime between February 2 and February 11.
“This has also been filed pending further information coming to light, which can be reported to us using the reference number 43240066936.”
