LABOUR has announced its candidate for the new Wokingham seat in the forthcoming general election.
It is the last of the main parties to declare who will represent them on July 4.
Monica Hamidi, a councillor in Ealing for the past two years, has been selected.
She has also served as a senior caseworker for an MP.
Her profile for her Ealing role says she is passionate about bringing the community together and helping everyone who might be in need.
She is particularly concerned about improving recycling rates, creating safer neighbourhoods and ensuring that we build genuinely affordable homes for families on low incomes.
Now she is asking voters in the borough to elect her.
In a statement, Ms Hamidi said she was delighted to have been selected for the poll, the first to be contested under new constituency rules.
“For too long we have been ignored and let down by the Tory Government. I promise as your local voice to stand up for our communities, to fight for what is right and be part of delivering the change this country needs,” she said.
“I came into politics to change people’s lives for the better – and that means changing the government. The choice is between a Labour government or more of the same under the Conservatives.
“As a councillor and as a caseworker for a member of Parliament I have seen at first hand the hardship the years of Tory chaos have inflicted on our people and our country. Only Labour can bring the change we need.
“Wokingham needs a Labour MP who will speak up for our area and who will support Labour’s agenda for change.”
The Wokingham seat has been represented since 1987 by Conservative Sir John Redwood. He will once again be hoping voters opt for him in the election.
Also standing is former Wokingham Borough Council leader Clive Jones, representing the Liberal Democrats.
Merv Boniface will stand for the Green party, and Colin Wright is standing for Reform.
