THE COMMUNITY Carer of the Year award, sponsored by Prospect Estate Agents, at the inaugural Wokingham Community Awards was shared between two women who have gone out of their way to make a difference in the borough.
Although Daisy Cripps wasn’t able to make awards night, Debs Parker was present to be recognised for her invaluable contributions to Cubs and Scouts, Wokingham Poppy Appeal and the delivery of Covid vaccinations.
Speaking after the inaugural ceremony, Debs said: “I’m embarrassed but really chuffed that someone put me forward for this. I thank David for it as he’s been in charge of the poppies. It’s overwhelming, I’ve done almost 40 years of volunteering in Wokingham so it’s a nice way to top if off.”
Of the individual who put Debs forward for the award, she added: “He knows what I think, he deserves it too, but it’s just a big thank you for recognising what I’ve done. I did Scouting for 35 years, then I’ve done the poppies, I helped with Covid, I’m now at the Cowshed. It’s just nice that someone recognises what you do.”
The nomination entry described Debs as having “caring written in her blood”, and it has been a part of Debs’ life ever since she took part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at the age of 16. As an avid supporter and volunteer at Wokingham Poppy Appeal, she spent time planning decorations and setting up shops that have been in use over the past couple of years.
Debs even took early retirement to help out with the Covid vaccination roll-out at the Bradbury Centre, attending most of the sessions and being there all day, putting people at ease. Recently, she has started helping out at The Cowshed, a Wokingham-based charity which provides essential items to those experiencing hardship across Berkshire.
“Wokingham needs people, that’s the point” Debs explained. “I always think everyone does it, but they don’t, and I know that. But if you’ve got a little bit of time then just give a little bit of time. It gives you back so much more.”
